Yongquan

Yong Quan / Gushing Spring is the acupuncture point also know as KID1 or Kidney 1. It is located:

On the sole of the foot, between the second and third metatarsal bones, approximately one third of the distance between the base of the second toe and the heel.

Deadman, P., Al-Khafaji, M., & Baker, K. (1998). A manual of acupuncture. Journal of Chinese Medicine Publications.

In addition to its name Gushing Spring this point is also a well point, the wood point of the Kidney Meridian of Leg Shao Yin; both the name and the point category suggest a place where qi bubbles up to the surface. Being a well point, it is a place of energy exchange where yin and yang transform into one another. Well points have an affect on the mind, shen, of the individual. It is also said that the Kidney houses the will, or zhi.

Being on the sole of the foot, this point connects us to the earth on which we walk. Being a well point, we might also consider the energy exchanged with the land on which we walk. I am reminded of a lesson by master Thich Nhat Hanh:

People usually consider walking on water or in thin air a miracle. But I think the real miracle is not to walk either on water or in thin air, but to walk on earth. Every day we are engaged in a miracle which we don’t even recognize: a blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, the black, curious eyes of a child—our own two eyes. All is a miracle.

May your qi flow freely back and forth at the Gushing Spring on your feet; and may you see the miracle in each step you take this year and always.
